What happens to us when we die? It's a question that has exercised humanity's finest minds for thousands of years. Most have sought the answer in religion; others have looked to philosophers, to the supernatural, or, more recently, to evidence from 'near death' experience. But never, it seems, to science. Yet that's where the answer appears to lie. Specifically, in cosmology, the study of the history and future of the universe. Taking his inspiration from Stephen Hawking's groundbreaking A Brief History of Time, author Andrew McLauchlin brings his background as a physicist to bear on this fascinating subject. He examines developments in cosmology and shows how they point to a conclusion about the dimension of time that has very real implications not only for the universe but also for us. What Really Happens When We Die? is a journey of discovery into a realm that offers an astonishing explanation for one of life's imponderables.

I am an avid reader of cosmology, quantum physics and spirituality. I have not found this viewpoint in any of these writings. The complexity and order of the universe and the issue of some type of Higher Power begs for at least some notion of change. The change that the author espouses, i.e. an endless loop of reruns, is devoid of meaning and value.

An interesting book, an easy read, though this concept is not entirely new. Its a physics point of view on an old idea, promoted by Nietzsche, by the ancient Egyptians and many others.

The essence of this book is that you live an endless repetition of the same life, with the same limitations and mistakes, and no opportunity for change or growth, EVER, for all eternity.

The book also is founded on some fairly flaky and flawed thinking by physicists, many of which continue to get wrong their understanding of quantum theory, the non-limitations of the light speed barrier from the actual reference point of light itself which they continually fail to see beyond...etc.

So while this is a very intriguing concept, I guarantee you you'd be hard pressed to find anyone among the seven billion human inhabitants of this planet (or the 108 billion total humans that have lived to date) that would consider this a good idea, a good explanation for what happens after death.

Supposedly humans are made in the image of God. If this is true, and humanity would universally condemn this form of design to the universe, how likely is it to be reality?

I think adding in the uncertainty principle of quantum theory, the concept of infinite or "negative" velocity at the light speed barrier (if you could actually travel at light speed you would have infinite velocity...from that point of view), and the concept of the multiverse - which is used/acknowledged in this theory in the book but somehow then, casually discarded as irrelevent, you will find this idea doesn't hold water... The author tends to also take this idea of simplicity and identity of like particles to an extreme (if an object is exactly like another they are one and the same - Wheeler proposed this with the electron - the one electron universe, but as a joke)...

If this theory were actually true it would be a form of hell far beyond any form of hell ever conceived by religion in any form prior.

In one of Whitley Streiber's books where he has spent years interacting with beings (he doesn't refer to them as aliens), at one point he is finally able to ask one of them a question, and it is "What does the universe mean to you?" The response transmitted to his mind by the being was an image of a coffin. He took that to mean the being was saying something to the effect that they were eternal, and that they found life to be the most insidious sort of prison from which they could never escape... You will find the same concept in a philosophical examination of The Lord of the Rings - where the elves, who are immortal, envy men who can die, because the elves never can... These are all similar concepts.

Here, however, its much worse, because not only do you never die, you also have zero chance of ever living any kind of different life. Every single event and choice of your life is repeated over and over endlessly, and you never have any awareness of it from one universe cycle to another.

hell hell hell hell hell in its worst possible form

Oh, Joy.
Excellent and very open about feelings and dying and dealing with it during and afterwards.
